Matthijs de Ligt's move to Manchester United is looking increasingly likely.
"A move for De Ligt is taking shape," Germany's Sky Sports reported on Monday (June 1). United have already opened talks with his agent Raffaella Pimenta," Sky Sports reported.
Munich are looking to rebuild their defense for the upcoming 2024-25 season. The Bavarians are determined to shake off a poor 2023-24 season. Munich finished third in the German Bundesliga behind Leverkusen and Stuttgart. Leverkusen, in particular, humiliated them without a win.
The same was true in other competitions. DFB-Pokal was eliminated in the round of 32. The UEFA Champions League (UCL) ended without getting past Real Madrid in the quarterfinals. It was the first uninterrupted season since 2011-12.
Munich have decided to part ways with head coach Thomas Tuchel. The club decided that a change of manager was necessary to turn things around. Tuchel's original contract ran until the summer of 2025, but he decided to terminate it at the end of this season. Vincent Kompany has been appointed as his successor.
Since Kompany's arrival, Munich have been rebuilding their defense. They have already signed Japanese defender Hiroki Ito, who has done well in Stuttgart. Josip Stanisic, who spent last season on loan at Leverkusen, has also signed a long-term contract with the Bavarians. Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah is also being linked with a move to Munich.
The existing defense is also set to be cleaned out. De Ligt is the most likely target. German newspaper TZ reported on May 28, "De Ligt is one of the candidates for sale by Munich this summer. Manchester United are rumored to be interested in him. Munich would like to hold talks with the player after Euro 2024."
Dayo Upamecano could also leave the club. 'TZ' reports, "Der Licht said he feels comfortable 19가이드 in Munich and is not considering a move. Nevertheless, he is ready to leave if the right offer comes along. This also applies to the Upamecano."
Fortunately, Kim Min-jae is likely to stay with the team. "Only Kim and Dyer are reportedly set for next season. In the case of De Ligt, high salaries and recurring injuries are the main reasons," it added.
According to Sky Sports, a move for De Ligt is looking increasingly likely. "Munich are in talks with United over a move for De Ligt," the outlet reports. United have already opened talks with Pimenta's agent. De Ligt is willing to move to United," the report said.
Ajax coach Erik ten Haag wants De Ligt, with whom he had a close relationship at the club. "Ten Haag wants him at any price, and he can leave if he receives an offer of €50 million. A full agreement has not yet been reached," the source added.
